Dealing With The Elderly And Their Fear of Flying

By Bobi MacKenzie

How to deal with the fear of flying in elderly people is a lot like dealing with the fear of flying for anyone. However with the elderly there can be additional reasons for their fear of flying that the younger generation doesn’t really have to deal with. With some elderly the fear of flying could be caused by their fear of falling.

Some older people have had a history of falls that caused them to get hurt and break a bone or may have caused them a lot of pain. When people get older their bones become more brittle and can break more easily then when they were younger. A simple fall for them could cause great harm and even the risk of death. Immobility can be a big problem for elderly on a plane and on the ground. When you are on a plane and need to get up, walk around, stretch, or even go to the rest room it can be easy to loose stability while walking on the plane which could cause you to fall and get hurt or even injure someone else.

Having a disability can be a source of anxiety and stress while in flight or in the airport. If you have a disability you may need assistance to arrive to the proper gate and maybe to board the plane itself. Usually the elderly and families with children are allowed to board first. So you will need to be there before first boarding call to board on time. The need for assistance can be fearful because it means that you will have to rely on someone that you may not know and trust.

It also means giving control to someone else for your safety. A factor that could make a person to fear flying is blindness or decreased eye sight. If it is hard to see what is in front of you or what is around you then it could be very scary. Being whisked through a airport on a cart driven by an airport employee can be very scary or fearful because you don’t know where you are going or who is taking you there. Plus when you get to the gate you may be touched by people you don’t know whether they are trying to board or assist you in boarding and getting seated.

There are easy ways to calm some of the fears that the elderly may have towards flying. If they need assistance they may be able to get a flying companion to fly with them easing their fears and allowing them to maintain more of a sense of control. People can also make prior arrangements for assistance before, during, and after a flight which will ease some fears being alone while on a flight. One very easy way to eliminate the fear of being rushed and falling trying to get around quick can be handled just by getting to the airport early the day of your flight. Being early can allow people to sit and relax before their flight and ensure you are there for your turn to board.

Why So Many People Are Anxious Before A Flight And Actually Fear To Fly

By Richard Desjardins

So, I was able to live and understand first hand why people would have a fear of flying. I was raised in the aviation industry, my father was also an aeronautical engineer and I was pretty much always at the airport with him. As a kid flying, it was like being in an amusement park ride. In my twenties I was all honcho about test flying defective aircraft and coming back to talk about it.

In my thirties, my children where starting to grow up and it seemed like I was taking unnecessary risks and I started delegating these test flights to other younger engineers who where qualified and honcho about telling their stories about surviving a test flight.

And here is why a lot of people over their 40’s fear to fly and this is what I came to realize. As you get older, life seems to become more precious. Your family and children become somehow more important and the fear that taking a flight for work purposes and holiday travels just doesn’t seem to be worth the risk. Questions like,”Is this my last flight, will I ever see them again.”come to mind.

And very often anxieties related to flying started with something that had nothing to do with flying. Stress at work before a flight, divorce, death in the family, etc…and flying with these preoccupying thoughts. These thoughts are then related to the aircraft and boom there you go, the fear of flying is born. Of course there are many other reasons why some people fear to fly which are personal to them, but I thought I would share my own personal experiences and don’t get me wrong, I still fly for holidays and love it.

I wrote a book when I left aviation full time on the subject. It’s unique because it’s in PDF format and has integrated movies, sounds, virtual 360 degree tours and much more. If you would like to obtain a copy just email me it’s 39.95$ and has over 50 pages.

Have a good flight

Overcoming a Fear of Flying Phobia

By Chris Dreyer

It’s not easy to overcome any type of phobia. Because phobias go deeper than just being scared of something, some people never overcome them. A person can have more than one phobia at one time and if each phobia is not dealt with it will be impossible to do certain things in life because of that fear. One of the phobias is the fear of flying phobia. This type of phobia could also be related to the fear of heights or the fear of closed in spaces, like on an airplane.

Fear of flying phobia cannot be overcome easily. This phobia is so strong it could stop someone from going on vacation or visiting a loved one if it meant that they had to fly. In some cases medication can be taken in order to calm the anxiety. But this is just one of the many ways that fear of flying phobia can be dealt with. When someone faces this type of fear it is better if they accept the fact that they may need help to overcome it from the beginning instead of trying to handle it first on their own.

Therapy may be an option for this type of phobia. In therapy you may find out what is causing your phobia and how to overcome it by confronting the phobia and successfully dealing with it in a positive way. In order to deal with a fear of flying one may need to take one step at a time slowly in order to control the anxiety and the overwhelming feeling you get when being up close with your phobia.

If you want to overcome the fear of flying phobia you need to set yourself a realistic goal to work up to. In order to do this you need to plan a simple trip that will require you to fly in six months. Over the next few months you will work on overcoming your fear. In some people it may feel as though you are pushing or forcing your self to deal with it and in a way you are. If you don’t take action and push yourself to do this you may never plan that simple trip and therefore will not overcome the phobia. Here are some tips to help someone with a fear of flying phobia to meet their goal.

- Go to the airport at least once a week. Watch the planes come in and take off. Familiarize yourself with the smell and sounds. This may sound useless but when you have a phobia your senses become stronger than ever when faced with the fear. If you are familiar with these you will not be overwhelmed at one time.

- Arrange for a private tour of a plane. It’s best to do a private tour so you can have time to look around and visualize your surrounding. Most airports will make time for a tour of their aircrafts upon request. When you are on the tour take the time to sit down in a seat and look around you. You want to also view the cockpit as well as the restrooms so you won’t have the fear of the unknown.

- Over the next few months try to visualize your self on the plane. Imagine yourself on every plane coming and going.

- When it’s time to fly request a seat at the front of the plane so you will be less aware of any turbulence.

- Be prepared for your flight by taking your favorite book or hobby with you. You can also download your favorite show or songs on your Ipod to watch or listen to while flying.

- Avoid any additional stress or anxiety that day. Clear your schedule and unplug your phone.

After a successful flight you should be proud of yourself for overcoming your fear of flying phobia.

How To Overcome Your Fear Of Flying

By Steve Hill

In this article I am going to write about how I managed to overcome my fear and phobia of flying. I hope the information will prove to be an inspiration to others out their who have a similar fear. In a way I have actually turned full circle as I now really enjoying travelling on an aeroplane and only wish I had faced up to my fear and sought help when I was a lot younger.

My family used to always take their holidays in the same country that we live, England. I am not complaining about this however as I used to love spending time on the South coast of England in places such as Cornwall and Devon. Many of my friends would talk about how they had travelled to the Canary Islands or to countries such as Turkey for their summer vacation and about how much of a good time they had had. This did not make me feel jealous in any way and I did not ever feel that I was missing out.

When I was seventeen years of age a few of my friends started to organise a holiday to Spain. I was invited to attend and I have to admit that I really wanted to go. There was only one thing that was stopping me, the fact that I did not want to fly on an aeroplane. I am not really sure as to why I was so scared, I was aware that flying is apparantly the safest form of travel and that millions of people fly each and every day but something inside of me just did not want to do it. I suppose it was the fact that if you have a crash in a car or on a train there is a good chance that you will survive but if the aeroplane crashes you are more than likely going to die. Even if you do survive the air crash it will have no doubt been a very scary experience.

On this year I decided not to go on this holiday to Spain with my friends and pretended that the reason why I was not attending was because I could not afford it.

My friends came back from their holiday with many stories of what had happened and on this occasion I really did feel that I had missed out.

Around a year later a second trip was organised, this time to Corfu. Yet again I was invited and this time stated that I was going to attend. I was now going to attempt to overcome this fear of flying.

I decided to attend hypnosis and am very happy to report that the results were superb. I have to say that on the day of my first flying experience, I was still very nervous but was able to cope with it. I have since travelled all over the world using air travel and am glad I met and sought help from that hypnotherapist.

Fear of Flying-Energy Tapping to the Rescue

By Eva Marklund

While most people believe their fear of flying is one big lump of a fear,
it is most often a number of very specific fears, masquerading as one large one.

Specific fears may be fear of: the cabin door closing, the engines revving, turbulence, bad weather, looking out the window, getting strapped into the seat, etc.

Recently I spoke with someone who was so afraid he would get sick just looking at a ticket. As we spoke, some interesting facts emerged. He could fly in a small plane, but was unable to board a commercial jet.

After some questioning it was clear to both of us, that what he believed to be a fear of flying, was actually the fear of seeing the terror in someone’s face. The fear had transposed itself to many aspects of flying, making it impossible for him to get on a plane. It is not unusual that what appears to be a fear of flying, is indeed another fear.

If we were to use the analogy of a forest, with the forest being the fear, and all the trees being specific pieces, or aspects of the fear, and the height of the trees being an indication of the intensity of the fear. The forest may consist of a few very tall trees, many small ones, or a mixture of both.

Sometimes a forest with one or two very tall trees, indicating a strong fear, can be quicker to neutralize than a forest with many small trees. (indicating a less intense fear, but more complex, with many aspects)

Energy Therapy is a fast and effective way to uproot the trees in your forest.

Tuning in to the fear by thinking about a particular piece of the fear, would cause a disruption, or disturbance, in your bodies energy system. (The same system that is used in acupuncture)

The disturbance in the energy system is the CAUSE of the symptoms of the fear. If there is no energy disturbance, there can be no fear. That is so important it bears to be repeated:

Without the disturbance in your energy system, there would be no fear.

The intervention consists of deliberately causing an energy disturbance by thinking of the fear. While the disturbance is active, so to speak, we will tap on acupuncture points that will effectively balance the system, removing the energy disturbance, and, most importantly, when the energy disturbance is gone, so is the fear. Once the disturbance has been “tapped away” it rarely if ever comes back.

Diligently doing this, finding all the little individual pieces of the fear, we can remove all the “trees” in the forest, totally eliminating what used to be a fear of flying. The trees can be removed quite swiftly, and the process can be quite fun.

When the trees are all gone, there will be no fear whatsoever, and you can fly with absolute ease and comfort.

Eva Marklund has helped people be free of their fear of flying for over 8 years, using the new generation of Energy Therapies. The work is fast and efficient, and comes with a money back guarantee. Sessions are done on the phone with clients from all continents.

Overcome Fear of Flying

By Abdul Majid Mohd Gani

Flying is generally considered to be one of the safest forms of public transportation currently available. Statistics compiled by the United States’ Department of Transportation concludes that airline travel is 29 times safer than driving a car. Despite the safety statistics, many are disabled by fear and experience the symptoms that make flying a misery.

The fear of flying is a specific phobia and one of many kind of anxiety disorder. It has many components to it. It may arise from such as anxiety of height, crowd, terrorism, feeling of not being in “control” and height. Luckily this phobia is one of the most treatable. The suggestions below offers help to overcome the fear of flying.

- Visit an airport. Make time to visit an airport. Once there, find a vantage point where you can observe planes taking-off and landing. Look at the different planes that are parked and note the type and make. Listen to the sounds in airport. Familiarize yourself with the surroundings.

- Arriving early will prevent the unpleasant feeling of being in a rush. You also avoid unnecessary stress.

- Expect to be nervous, excited and uneasy. This will allow you to relax and prevent panic.

- Get a front seat. The front seats are generally more quiet and smoother.

- Fly sober.

- Breathe deeply during take-off and landing.

- Don’t let your fear of flying exaggerate turbulence.

- Familiarize yourself with flight procedures.

- Act. Strike conversations with fellow passengers.

Remember if you do the things you fear, the extinction of the fear is certain.

Fear Of Flying - 4-Ways To Cope With, Or Eliminate, Your Flying Fears

By Pete Koerner

It is estimated that approximately 40% of all airline travelers experience some degree of fear of flying - or some other fear related to flying. With almost 3-billion people flying each year, that’s a lot of anxious travelers! And, considering that about 40% of all air travel is business-related, there are a lot of people who are afraid to fly but have to anyway. There is help for all you fearful fliers; and, believe it or not, the most effective way to freedom from flying fears may also be the safest and least expensive.

The reality is that flying is the safest way to travel; but fear has nothing to do with reality. Of course, when you’re the one who’s afraid, fear seems pretty real; and people have always taken steps to cope with fear of flying. Traditionally, people have used alcohol and cigarettes to soothe their fears on airplanes; but smoking is no longer an option - and drinking can cause more problems than it’s worth. Besides, simply sedating your fears is not the same as truly eliminating them - especially when the trade-off is your health.

Here are the four most commonly-used methods for overcoming fears of flying:

  1. Pharmaceuticals - where a person uses prescription drugs to tranquilize or sedate themselves during the uncomfortable phases of travel. As with cigarettes and alcohol, this approach has many obvious downsides and does nothing to neutralize the underlying fear. Drugs, cigarettes, and alcohol all seem reasonably affordable; over time, however, this is also a very expensive alternative that carries its own health-risks. Of the more commonly used methods, this method is merely a coping-tool, and should probably be a last resort if used at all.
  2. Cognitive Therapy - where a person discusses their fears with a clinical practitioner - in a clinical setting - in order to overcome their fears through rationalization, or other clinical approaches. This method is expensive; and, you could potentially talk about your problems for years without resolution.
  3. Education and Desensitization - where someone with a fear of flying is educated about airplanes and what’s going on at various stages of flight, and/or gradually exposed to more and more realistic stimuli until they are used to, or comfortable with, airplanes and flying. This approach is potentially free, as you could educate yourself about airplanes and flying; and, if your fear is based on a lack of familiarity or understanding, this method can be very effective at helping you overcome that fear.
  4. Energy Psychology - where a person uses simple, easy-to-learn and use, methods - such as the Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) - to disrupt the stressful thoughts, feelings, and emotions that cause you to feel discomfort. This method is quickly becoming the clinical method of choice, as well as a popular favorite among frequent fliers, because these techniques are safe, simple, effective, and easy for anyone to use - anywhere, on practically anything. Best of all, once you know one of these techniques, you can use it on other problems in other areas of your life.

I have arranged these alternatives from my least favorite (1. Drugs), to my most favorite (4. Energy Psychology); but, if you are afraid of flying, and must fly anyway, do what you must to make your experience tolerable. Common sense says to start with the easiest, least-invasive, and most-affordable alternative. In the case of overcoming your fears of flying, EFT is definitely a good first choice; there’s no risk, and you can always use any of the other methods - EFT can potentially make other treatments even more effective. Do yourself a favor and find and download one of the many free EFT manuals available online; and you can check EFT out for yourself - and add EFT to your arsenal of self-help or stress-management tools should you encounter other stresses in life.

Fear of Flying - How to Overcome Fear When You’re Flying

By Michael Lee

So you are about to board the plane. You freeze; and however you try, your body does not cooperate. No matter what you do, you cannot take those nasty plane crash landings away from your mind. You feel your hear palpitating as you sense the danger that will surely happen. Finally, you decide not to fly. What you just experienced are symptoms of aviataphobia, or fear of flying. Be assured that you are not alone – fear of flying is experienced by people worldwide.

Physiological symptoms commonly reported by people with fear of flying are trembling, muscle tension, difficulty breathing, palpitations, abdominal and intestinal problems, sweating, nausea, and dryness of the mouth. Meanwhile, psychological symptoms include memory problems, persistent fantasies about bad things happening like the plane crashing, and other negative thoughts and feelings that build up anxiety.

This fear, though, no matter how bad it looks to you right now, is highly treatable. You can try doing it yourself first before consulting a psychologist or an authority on overcoming fear of flying.

First thing you need to do is identify the root, the real reason for your fear. You can ask yourself, “What was happening in my life before I felt this fear? Did I experience any major stress or life-changing experience? Has anyone made me feel hurt or angry?” Also, ask yourself if your fear of flying may just be an excuse for you to avoid something. Maybe your fear is not the real issue. Ask as many questions as you want that you think are relevant to identifying the root of your fear.

Once you have identified your reason, it will be easier for you to address your fear. If you conclude that flying is not the issue, you can then face the real issue.

However, if you cannot identify the reason for your fear and you feel it is just getting worse, then it is time to consult a psychologist. Pick a psychologist you feel comfortable with to really help you overcome your fear of flying.

Does Travel Insurance Cover Fear of Flying?

By Jean Andrews

Fear of Flying has been a problem for many people since passenger flights began. It is a fear or phobia, the same as many people may fear spiders, public speaking, or heights. Fear of flying has probably increased dramatically in the past decade - especially since 9/11. It’s understandable. How many people happily boarded planes after that terrible event? After all, when you think about it, flying is not a very natural thing for humans to do - we weren’t born with wings!

In today’s tight security climate we hardly ever get to see the pilots or cockpit crews who have our lives in their hands. It might be helpful to remember that they are human beings too - with lives and families of their own - and they fully intend to return home to them! Gone are the days when you might be lucky enough to obtain the captain’s permission to visit the cockpit on a long-haul flight. The pilots are locked in behind a bullet proof door and the entire process of flight is a mystery for many passengers! It’s a real shame.

Fear of flying is an annoying and often debilitating problem for those afflicted but, not only that, it can also cause disruption to holiday plans, affect career paths, and cause financial losses. Those who are required to fly frequently on business could find themselves held back in their career or even out of a job because of their fear of flying.

Most people, if they were honest, would admit to feeling some jitters or nerves before take off or landing, or when experiencing turbulence. Some have a stronger reaction, perhaps exacerbated by an existing anxiety condition.

It’s no secret that many people make out their will before flying! We all know about the statistics that you are much more likely to be involved in a car accident than a plane crash, but for many this is little consolation.

It is normal for a lot of people to feel the urge to cancel their flights or holidays if there has been a recent problem with hijacking, terrorism, or a plane crash. Fear of flying is a valid condition which is recognized medically. The anxiety can be so bad that it can cause physical reactions such as panic attacks, sweating, trembling, palpitations, dizziness, intestinal problems, clammy hands and nausea. Blocked ears during descent can be a problem - especially for children - but there are simple techniques to alleviate this pain which can be learned; chewing gum can help.

Most people will know of someone who is afraid of flying. They may be unable to go on holiday abroad because of it, although for many people their desire for a holiday in the sun may eventually outweigh their fear! It is often a form of claustrophobia, combined with a lack of understanding of how an aircraft operates and stays in the air. Young mothers are one group who tend to be more susceptible because of their protective instincts towards their children.

If someone you know is afflicted, you could make a difference in their life by encouraging them to seek help. There are several independent companies, as well as major airlines, which offer courses to help people overcome their fear of flying. Virgin Atlantic offers a Flying without Fear programme. British Airways/Aviatours offers a one-day course. The course instructors include trained pilots and psychologists.

During the courses the various stages of flight and the noises associated with them are simulated. For example, the sound of aircraft engines powering up or down can cause fear that something is wrong or the plane is going to crash. The loud whirring and clunking noises of the wheels (landing gear) being lowered and locked into place can be very frightening for those who don’t understand what is happening. The courses may include relaxation techniques and end with an actual short flight where everything is explained as it occurs. Once a passenger has a basic understanding of the way an aircraft works the fears are usually greatly diminished. Other self-help methods are available such as books, DVDs, CDs and computer courses. Online support forums may be helpful for those who wish to share their thoughts and fears with other sufferers or hear from those who have found successful ways to cope.

Natural approaches, such as relaxation techniques and hypnosis can be very helpful. It’s worth checking if your GP would be willing to prescribe something to help you stay calm during a flight. It’s never a good idea to resort to drinking alcohol or taking sleeping tablets. Alcohol combined with the dehydrating effects of flying can make you feel even worse, and who wants to start their holiday in a groggy haze after taking sleeping pills!

Unfortunately, the bottom line is that travel insurance does not provide compensation for cancelled flights due to a fear of flying. The cancellation would be deemed ’self-inflicted’ and you would find yourself personally liable for any financial losses. Therefore, if you want to be able to join your family and friends for holidays in the sun, it is never too late to obtain help for your fear of flying. One of the methods outlined in this article may hold the key to overcoming the fears and unlock many years of flying and happy holidays abroad!

Overcoming Fear Of Flying Quickly And Easily With EFT

By Pete Koerner

If you’re afraid of flying, you don’t need me to tell you about the uncomfortable, negative effects this fear can cause. And, if you are a business traveler who is afraid of flying - but must fly anyway - you probably understand the burden and the very real cost of coping with this fear much better than I do. Now imagine how much better your life would be if you could quickly and easily remove your fear of flying; imagine what life would be like if you weren’t afraid. Let me introduce you to that possibility so you can experience it as a reality.

Here’s some statistics for you: By the year 2011, it is estimated that there will be approximately 2.75 billion air travelers each year - a number close to one-half of the Earth’s current population. Approximately 40% of all air travel is business related; which means there are over a billion people flying that don’t necessarily enjoy flying. In fact, it is estimated that between 30-40% of all air travelers suffer from some degree of aviophobia, or fear of flying. Of course, if you’re one of those who are afraid of flying, statistics don’t really matter; all that matters is that you are afraid, stressed, or uncomfortable every time you fly and you wish you could get rid of that feeling.

Well, you can; and it is easier than ever. In fact, some of you will get the message from this short article and take the couple necessary steps to overcome your fear of flying right now - on your own. It is possible for you to do that; and it’s also possible that you can do it for Free! Until recently, there has basically been three-ways to deal with fear of flying: Desensitization; Cognitive Therapy; and Pharmaceuticals. Until smoking on airplanes was banned, cigarettes were a common “remedy;” and many people still use alcohol to cope with their fears while on airplanes. None of these methods is quick, easy, inexpensive, or very effective; and, though alcohol is relatively quick and easy, there’s a good chance it could get you kicked-off the plane - and maybe even arrested.

You shouldn’t have to pay such a high-price for a fear that you didn’t “choose” to have in the first place. Cognitive therapy could take years of your time and thousands of dollars; and, it might not work anyway. Education and desensitization are typically only effective if the fear is actually based on a lack of knowledge, understanding, or experience. Oftentimes, when the fear is intense, or isn’t easily resolved, fliers resort to tranquilizing, sedating, and otherwise drugging themselves in order to survive their airborne ordeal. None of these things is necessary any longer; you now have more options and alternatives - and some of them are almost 100% effective at resolving problems like fear of flying.

The Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), along with several other new, energy psychology techniques, can be learned and used by anyone; and these techniques have eliminated problems like fear of flying, fear of public speaking, fear of water, etc, in a matter of a few minutes in some cases. To use EFT to eliminate fear of flying, you must identify your fear, create the problematic, inner emotional state by thinking about it, or imagining it, and then apply the basic EFT process to your stated fear until the intensity subsides or disappears completely. Then, if any portion of the fear emerges later, while you are flying, you can simply apply the EFT method on-the-spot to release the fear and regain control of your emotional state. EFT is quick and easy to learn; and it could free you from a lifetime of fears, phobias, and other limiting beliefs and conditions.

You can download a Free, Illustrated Guide to using EFT and possibly even cure your own Fear of Flying in the time it takes you to read the free manual! Applying EFT only takes a couple minutes and you can do it anywhere — and use it on practically anything! *To download your FREE, Illustrated Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) Manual, go to: http://www.ExploreExpandEvolve.com (It only takes about 30-seconds to get your Free EFT manual and start erasing fears and limiting beliefs!)
